Is there a way to tell how much similar items have been sold for in the past?

Yes, click on "Advanced Search" then put in the keywords and click on "Completed Listings".

Hi, when you seach for an item to purchase you will see to the left of the search bar an option for advance search. Click on this and tick the box that says "completed listings" it will show you what the item sold for or if it sold at all.

Refine your search as far as possible, then scroll down and look at the left hand side - there's a button marked "auctions ended" or simialr. That'll show you.
