Buying: is it best to bid at the last minute?

I can't work it out, are you at an advantage if you put in a sniper bid at the last minute? If so, I am far too disorganised, are the sniper websites any good?

Nope no advantage. Unless someone bids against you your max bid won't be reached anyway.

tethersend · 01/11/2009 13:28

You can avoid a bidding war if you snipe. Some of the sniper sites have stopped working now though, so I am lost

whomovedmychocolatecookie: the reason a sniper works well is because people do not have time to bid against you if you do it in the last 5 seconds. Also, I make my maximum bid MUCH higher than the current high bid, knowing that I will still get it for just above the high bid, but the high bidder will not have time to outbid me.

yes i do in the last 15 seconds it's fun! and if you put in the very top amount you're prepared to pay you won't feel like to paid too much iykwim.

Just to pick up on what tethersend said - would this be why goofbay isn't working?

It said that it couldn't connect to ebay and I lost the item I was trying to snipe ?

What happened with them? Does the new one definitely work?

Thanks!

tethersend · 01/11/2009 22:06

Am testing the new one now, TheTerribleSpider... will let you know in 5 mins if it works or not

TheTerribleSpider · 01/11/2009 22:08

great, good luck

TheTerribleSpider · 01/11/2009 22:33

How did you get on?

tethersend · 01/11/2009 22:42

Keep doing it wrong- it's not as simple as goofbay!

Should know in about 3 mins 16 secs

tethersend · 01/11/2009 22:46

Yay! It worked!!!!

Back in the game!!!

TheTerribleSpider · 02/11/2009 14:49

What were you doing that was wrong? I'm going to try it later this evening on something.

tethersend · 02/11/2009 14:55

Forgot to check the 'activate snipe' box, which is just above where you enter your maximum bid. Once you have done it, the whole box becomes purple.

Test it on an inexpensive item you don't want first though!

Good luck

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 02/11/2009 15:03

at tethersend and resolves not to hold her to her promise.

TheTerribleSpider · 02/11/2009 20:50

Yay!! The you OLKN and tethersend! I'm back up and running

I googled goofbay and the error message and it seems that quite a few people are having the same problem. Some think that ebay is blocking snipe bids.

TheTerribleSpider · 02/11/2009 20:51

Than was meant to say thank you

iheartdusty · 02/11/2009 20:55

yes I lost items from using goofbay.

why should ebay block them?

TheTerribleSpider · 02/11/2009 21:46

I haven't a clue, could just be conspiracy theories for all I know...
Would higher end prices, achieved by bidding wars make the fees that Ebay receive any higher?

I don't sell so wouldn't be too sure.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 03/11/2009 01:07

Glad the sniper worked; I got it from someone else and happy to pass it on.
