question about paypal from first time ebay seller

Apologies for a dumb question - I've bought occasionally on ebay in the past and set up a personal paypal account linked to my credit card. I've just listed and sold an item on ebay for the first time and the buyer has paid by paypal.

In the email notification it says I will have to upgrade to a Premier or Business account - is this right? We are only planning to sell the odd item of baby stuff and in the terms and conditions it implies that Premier and Business accounts are not for personal/household use. It also says something about being able to receive a limited number /value of credit/debit card payments to a personal account but gives no further info. The paypal website is very hard to decipher. Can anyone help? How do we get the funds out of Paypal - do we have to upgrade?

no not right, I never got that when I started selling.

Oops, I should have mentioned also if your buyer has paid by bank transfer (paypal calls for the money direct from a bank account) then you will definately need to upgrade to be able to accept the payment. I've also got a nasty feeling that the limited number of credit card payments may apply to US only. Although I could be wrong. Paypal aren't known for being transparent. Sorry I can't help any more.

This is the message I got on the payment notification email:

"You received a payment of xx GBP from xxxx

Thanks for using PayPal. To accept this payment, you?ll need to upgrade to a Premier or Business account."

Anyone else seen this and what did you do?

I think I had to do it...can't remember tbh, it was about 5 yrs ago, but I seem to remember something about becoming a Premier account holder...I'll just pop and have a look. BRB

If I remember correctly, this may be the situation:

You can accept payments into a personal account from paypal cleared funds (i.e., the buyer has funds in their paypal account and uses these funds to pay).

If your buyer has paid using a credit or debit card (in other words has not paid using cleared funds in their paypal account) you will need to upgrade your account to be able to accept this payment.

This also means that you will be charged 20p for the transaction + 3.4% of the total.

It's a bit confusing - the paypal terms and conditions seem to say you can receive a limited number/value of credit card payments into a personal account (for the fees mentioned above which we were expecting) but no indication of the limits.

Yes, I have a premier account....never take much notice tbh of the fees....

I got exactly the same thing on a couple of transactions, and ignored it, and seem to have received the money no problem so I don't really understand it.
