How can my item be at 99p despite there having been 2 bids

For some reason an item I have listed shows 2 bids (both by the same bidder) each for 99p so the item is currently at 99p. How is this possible? Surely the second bid has to be higher than 99p even if it is by the same bidder?

It means they have put in the initial bid of 99p but then put in another higher bid in the hope that no-one else will outbid them. As you can't outbid yourself, it'll remain at 99p.
