Can someone enlighten me about paypal fees?

I'm trying to work out a formula so I can do an exel spreadsheet to work out if I'm actually making a profit but just don't understand the paypal fees (and the website has not enlightened me). From the paypal site it would seem that I am charged 3.4% of the amount + 20p. So.......on a 99p final value + £1 p&p I have a charge of 27p. Please someone explain how this is arrived at.

27p of 99p @ 3.4% +20p=
27p-20p = 7p left, which is the 3.4% of 99p.

But 3.4 % of 99p is about 3.4p, not 7p [equally confused]

If you included the postage it would make more sense.

MrsFogi · 14/04/2009 23:42

I've been approaching it like ComparettheM - FBGB can you come back and explain in idiot terms?

But you are taking in £2 from paypal because this includes the postage - 3.4% of £2 is about 7p + the 20p = 27p

Ah yes - I was thinking of it being the ebay fees but of course it is paypal being the total amount .

I blame DD for just having been sick and meaning I have lost some more brain cells.

CompareTheMeerkat · 14/04/2009 23:45

Not that I am blaming DD for being sick, it just explains why I couldn't work out a simple calculation.

FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 14/04/2009 23:45

If you take the 20p away from the 27p charge you are left with 7p yes? (27-20=7). 3.4% of 99p isn't 7 though, it should be about 3.4p rounded up. Pretend the 99p is 100, 3.4% should be 3.4p yes? They have charged you 3.4 p for the packing.

SlightlyMadStirrup · 14/04/2009 23:48

Of course they have charged you for the packageing. We are talking paypal fees - which is about a money transaction. That cash transaction is for the whole value including the postage and packaging fees.

Would anyone believe me if I said I am an accountant ?

SlightlyMadStirrup · 14/04/2009 23:50

I don't think anyone is disagreeing. We are all justifying our own (essentially identical) posts!

CompareTheMeerkat · 14/04/2009 23:53

I totally agree with everyone btw - was just annoyed at my inability

MrsFogi · 15/04/2009 00:01

I get it sorry was being spectacularly dim - am having big rows with dh about my the shortcomings of excel so am somewhat distracted.
