I want to buy something that is coming from Hong Kong (Mario Kart toys for DS) - do I have to pay any tax when it gets to the UK like I would if it was coming from the US?

You might have to. The general guidance is that goods over 18 pounds value are subject to tax. But many come through without being taxed - bit of a lottery.
