If you buy or sell items on eBay, you will find tips and advice on this forum.

Would you bid on an item from a brand new ebayer that you suspect might have fallen off the back of a lorry?

There's a handbag I like - £180 ish new. One has just turned up on ebay wanting a starting bid of £75. At that price I might get it, but not at full price as dh out of work at end of Jan.

Apparently the bag is new with tags. I asked why she is selling rather than returning to shop, and she reckons she's lost the receipt and it's too late now. She's selling another bag from the same designer too.

Am a bit wary as she's new with no feedback, and it sounds dodgy to cynical old me, but everyone has to have a first transaction at some point.

If I buy and it doesn't arrive, paypal will refund won't they?

Would you bid?

it'll be fake and if your dh has no job, you dont need it at any price

Fake designer handbags and shoes are epidemic on Ebay. If it has a low starting price and another one, I would be suspicious. Anyway, why are you even asking? I think you know the answer!

Its much more likely to be a fake. Fakes can be very good, and her story is pretty unlikely.

SniffyHock · 18/12/2008 22:05

Would someone really fake a Ted Baker bag? That is not me being snobby but I thought that fakes were only made of designer labels, Gucci, Chanel etc.

ninedragons · 18/12/2008 22:15

Having just left China after two years, you would not BELIEVE the variety of fake bags. They all come with tags, dust bags, the works. And it's definitely not just LV anymore. I've even seen very good fakes of those "I am not a plastic bag" cloth shopping bags.

Her story is pretty ridiculous. She would SURELY have a friend who would be thrilled to take it off her hands at less than half price the week before Christmas.

I've just goofed her & she recently sold a Ted Baker silver watch which was also new

That's an awful lots of Ted Baker stuff to have to hand to sell

I would say it's stolen goods tbh!

If you buy goods you know or suspect to be stolen, you are committing an offence (handling stolen goods). I dont mean to sound holier than thou, but I think this should bother you more than possibility of it being a fake.

I dont know much about ebay, but surely there is a mechanism for getting dodgy sellers banned?

higgle · 19/12/2008 15:35

Most designer bags on ebay are fake, and this will almost certainly not be genuine.

MrsMagooo · 19/12/2008 20:49

The fact that she states it still has the security tag inside screams stolen to me!

Andthentherewerethree · 19/12/2008 20:58

i don;t think she means securtiy tag as in the ones that go off wehn you leave the shop, but the ones that have things like serial numbers where you are supposed to be able to check its genuine or not with the company who made it.
