Shill bidding do you think?

I was bidder 1. They've now emailed me to say that they'd accept £49, which was presumably as high as they dared shill bid up to in case I hadn't bid any higher than £50.

The reserve must have been at least £50 though. Are you happy to pay £49? If you then go for it - you can't really tell if it was shill bidding as it's a private auction.

One bidder bidding in such small increments at the last minute knowing that the min reserve price would be £50 screams shill bidder to me.

Depends how much you want it.

You knew the reserve was at least £50 so even if it isn't a shill bidder you would of had to go over the reserve in order to win IYSWIM??
