Post or courier service - help!!!

I sell now and again and have always posted royal mail but just wondered about alternatives. I know nothing about nor have ever used a courier service can someone please write me a quick couriers for dummies guide! Thank you!!!

Couriers usually start at around £6-7 unless you're posting large quantities, so Royal Mail is usually cheaper for smaller stuff.

do they come and pick up? Some stuff such as clothes bundles is costing £10ish RM
