how do I use a sniper?

A friend has asked me to buy something for her. I don't mind doing it, but have got to thinking that a sniper may be a good idea as the auction ends at a time when I wouldn't normally be sitting at the computer (yes, there is such a time ) and I'm starting to worry that I'll forget.

Last time I tried, I cocked it up and made a bid, which I don't actually want to do just yet with four days still to go.

So... how do I get a sniper to buy it for me?

What happens when more than one of you are using sniper tools to bid? I thought that the point of it was to outbid any max bid no matter what.
