Ebay help needed please

Can anyone help with a refund issue, please?
I won an ebay auction for a boden dress which was sold as BNWOT. When the dress arrived, it had a tear near the seam. I informed the seller who offered me a refund. Now obviously it cost me the item plus postage to buy and I will have to pay postage to send it back. Is it standard practice for the seller to refund both sets of postage or no postage at all? I just want to be sure of my grounds before taking any action.

hi i have only returned something once but this is what happened...
original postage-not refunded
postage to send back-i paid
replacement sent-they paid

I'd be inclined for all the postage to be refunded, on the understanding that you'll give them tip-top feedback to say they'd done it.

That was meant to be 'I'd be inclined to ask for all . . . '

I'm not sure there is a standard practice tbh. I've refunded both sets myself because I am a wonderful, kindhearted and generous individual but when I have had to return things I have bought from others I had either only the original postage or nothing at all refunded to me.

Have you had a look on eBay help?

Just had a look for you - seems that it is up to the seller to state their returns policy (so looks like they can choose).

This is what it says for business users...

Return policy for business sellers
As a seller, you should clearly outline the conditions of how the buyer can return the item in your return policy (eg: who pays for the return postage cost).

Can't see a mention about original postage refund but I'm sure it will say somewhere - only had tme for a quick look for you.

a refund should be the total amount the buyer paid - ie item cost + p&P. a good seller will refund the return postage but they aren't obliged to.
If it were to go through a paypal dispute then the buyer needs to return the item by trackable means at their own cost.

If it's a paypal transaction then make sure they 'refund' rather than send a payment. A payment will result in costing you fees
