Help, seller want me to pay postage for a replacement I don't want

Hi. I bought a watch strap from a foreign seller that failed after a few weeks (I'm in the UK). They are offering a replacement, but want me to pay postage ($27) for an item I think is inadequate quality. They will not offer a refund. I can't find my way through the Ebay system to start a complaint, and I can't see how to rate/review the seller (option has been disabled?). Can anyone offer advice?

Did you pay through PayPal? You could open a dispute with them.

Hecho · 15/03/2025 14:52

Holding, no, unfortunaltely. I don't have a Paypal account. I paid by credit card to Ebay. I was hoping to be able to get through to Ebay, but it seems to be practically impossible. I'll give it a day or so, then go to my card provider.

I got a refund from a very reluctant seller last week. You go to contact seller and choose one of the options - I said item hadn't arrived, but there may be a poor quality option .That starts the dispute with eBay, leading, in my case, to a refund

I paid by card too, not PayPal.

Thanks Muddy. I've had a long conversation with them today, and they are quite certain they won't refund. There isn't a 'poor quality' option annoyingly, and when I try to get through the chat to find that option, it takes me in circles. I've run out of steam on it today, but I'll look tomorrow and see if that route might work.

If it failed after a short time, then it is faulty. You should be able to start a return using that as the reason, and youshould get a free returns label, unless they have e the sense to just refund you.
I'm a business seller so am not too sure how easy it is to contact eBay through the help section for private buyers, but if you find a way to contact them or ask them to call you then they should help.

Not a lot of people realise this, but eBay items are only guaranteed to work when they arrive, they don’t have a warranty as such. If it broke after a couple of weeks of wear then you don’t have any rights to a refund or a replacement.

HarpieDuJour · 21/03/2025 12:03

That depends entirely on the seller. A business seller is still bound by the SOGA and other regulations. A private seller has far fewer obligations.

EBay won’t enforce it though, even with a business seller. I’m not saying you couldn’t take it further through other channels though.

A buyer opened an item not as described case with me and said 'pood quality" in the description.

It actually wasn't poor quality, but that's besides the point.

Is it possible to open an item not as described case?

For help ...just keep.typing "Contact agent" into the chat, eventually if will give you the option of chat online or call from us.

Phone EBay.
It happened to me. EBay opened a returns case for me. I didn’t pay returns postage.
