Post office compensation

I recently sold something on ebay and it has probably been lost by Royal Mail. It seems that to claim compensation above the postage cost I am required to provide:

"proof of the value of the item, for example a receipt or bank statement."

The item I sold was old so I have no receipts but my final sale price of £30 could easily be verified through a cursory search of other sold items on ebay. The original price was over £100 years ago but they are no longer for sale.

Are the royal mail going to go down the "computer says no" route because I have no proof of purchase? Is there anything I can feasibly do?

Just attach a screen shot of your eBay sale to evidence the value of £30. How much did you say it was worth when you posted it?

I didn't say anything about the value. I gave them the parcel and asked for second class.

Do you have the paper receipt from the post office ? You will need this to make a claim.
When I claimed for an eBay item that I had went missing I only got my postage costs refunded and it was in stamps.

You give your eBay item number and show the transaction to them. I think 2nd class only covers up to £20 though and sometimes they can be a pain, in that they wouldn't even contribute £20 towards a higher item 😣 because they think it should have been sent with the correct cover. They do usually refund postage too. Put in a claim and hope for the best!

Check your receipt - it should state the value?

I have claimed before. I sent a link to the ebay item + post office receipt. Got my refund of item + postage cost without any quibble.
