Can I cancel a sale

I'm selling a large and expensive item that has never been used (it's not a phone or any kind of tech). I listed it for sale on Sunday and have had lots of unofficial offers via messages but tonight someone has purchased it. However, the buyer lives in a uni hall of residence. Last year my daughter was in a HofRes and not one but two parcels that she was sent didn't turn up. A parcel from H&M and one from M&S. Both signed for with a scribble but the halls reception did not have them. The buyer of my item does not speak much English and says they do not usually sign for parcels and they are left in reception for collection.I would post via Parcelforce 48 but not sure what happens if they can't find anyone to sign for an item. I think it's too risky to send it - can I just cancel the sale? Any help gratefully received!

It's frowned upon and eBay will likely still charge you the full fees for the transaction. That said, in your shoes I'd probably do the same.

EBay won’t charge you fees if you cancel BUT you will have a black mark on your account and the buyer will be entitled to leave negative feedback.

That's not necessarily true. I've definitely been charged the fees when I needed to cancel a sale before and eBay do warn you that this may be the case.
