Is this a thing? I have a buyer who's asked me to changed my listing to a buy it now at a certain price as they can't bid or make an offer. Is this a thing?

It’s a thing for chancers. Don’t entertain it.

I'm trying to work out what the scam is.

I can't work out why they won't just offer

Yes, they are hoping to get it at a knock down price!

lljkk · 27/04/2023 19:38

What is the most ludicrously high price you could hope for, OP?
Revise it on Buy it now for that ludicrous price & let them know.

If they don't buy within 48 hours then revert to old format, nothing lost.

drpet49 · 27/04/2023 19:39

Well if you’re happy to sell it for a certain price do it. I prefer buy it now listings.

YukoandHiro · 27/04/2023 19:39

Tell them to jog on. Make an offer or don't, but you won't be playing games.
Also since it takes months to actually buy a house whatever they offer is only ever an offer

YukoandHiro · 27/04/2023 19:40

Oh you're not talking about a house 🤣🤣🤣

purplecorkheart · 27/04/2023 19:43

I have been that buyer once or twice and it was an item that I needed before the sale ended. I asked the seller would they consider buy it now. In my cases it was items that I could not get my hands on within the timeframe I needed them. I probably paid way more than I would if I bid.

However I have over 300 transactions for purchasing all with 5 star reviews from various sellers.

strawberryfluff · 27/04/2023 19:54

It just seems odd. They've offered above the start price. Buy they've said they can't bid or offer. If I were them I'd just offer the amount!

Ignore them. They are probably an oddball.

I too thought it was a house although the OP doesn't say anything of the sort!

strawberryfluff · 27/04/2023 20:00

Ah i think I've solved it. I put a block on people who cause 2 or more cancelled sales by not paying I'm 6 months as I was getting loads of them. Looking at their feedback I think it might be that. No chance am I unblocking!

Unless it's changed (as I haven't had this scenario for a while) a seller can end an auction at any time & sell to the highest bidder at that point. So if you see something that is auction only you could always message the seller & ask if they'll do that. It saves the hassle & cost to the seller to change the listing, as there is an up-front fee to the seller to list as BIN, which some are reluctant to do for fear that the item will then just stick.

Most auctions these days are combined with Best Offer. Most of my sales are Best Offer sales. It used to be auction or BIN/Best Offer, but moving Best Offer to be an upfront fee-free option alongside auctions has reduced the number of BIN listings overall.

Tbh it is so long since I used ebay I cannot remember why it went to btn. I woukld say it is the bones of 15 years or so. It is funny I very rarely look at ebay now.
