Combined postage discount at checkout or basket?

I'm trying to buy several items from one seller. I put them in the basket, messaged him & asked for combined postage (should go down by over £6 so worth doing).

He messaged back telling me to go to checkout, as they can't do an invoice until I do. How does this work? Surely discounts are applied/invoices sent while items are still in the basket.

I hit 'checkout' & haven't paid yet. Messaged him - no response & no change in the price.

Any ideas? I'm willing to just remove the items from the basket & forget it, but I'd like to know how this is supposed to work.

I think (though it's a while since I did it) that you go to checkout then click Request Total. You should be sent an invoice with reduced postage.

Request total is on the basket page, not the checkout page. And it doesn't work in this case because there's a discount on the price of each item, which is nothing to do with postage costs.

Well, half my problem's solved. I just sniped someone (always a cheap thrill) so I cleared out my basket in case that interfered with the sale. I couldn't find any way to clear the checkout page, but ebay did eventually.

So the original guy's lost my business. I'd still like to know if & how the invoice-at-checkout works.
