Buyer wants me to pay for "dry cleaning"

I sold a dress I don't ever remember wearing as nwot.

I listed it as a 14 and could swear it was a 14 (however it's not impossible it had a small, hard to read size on the label and I got it wrong).

Buyer says it's got bobbles and is not new, and is a size 12, not 14.

I said, if it's a 12 I must have made a mistake, I apologise.

And that I don't remember wearing it and didn't notice any bobbling when listing. I said v sorry for disappointment/inconvenience - please request a return and I'll accept it

Buyer now says , if fits her in spite of being a 12. She's removed the bobbling. But she feels it smells stale (not mentioned in first message) and it will cost £10 to dry clean (it's a wool dress) and if I pay that, she'll keep it.

She says she's wanted that dress for a while (even though it's been in eBay for months before she bought it).

What do I do?

*on ebay

She also said I'd have to sell it as used if I were to get it back.

Fair enough.

But I find her approach suspicious.

I'm concerned about feedback too - and not sure if eBay will remove negative feedback if she doesn't get her way here and leaves it.

Just ask her to send it back if she isn't happy.

If it seems stale when you get it back, hand wash it gently in a mild soap solution, and lay it on a towel to dry.

Then re-list.

Sprig1 · 20/12/2022 17:52

Just pay up and check your things properly before listing them in future.

HimiJendrix · 20/12/2022 17:53

I would ask her to send it back but i suspect that she is trying to pull a fast one. I no longer sell on eBay, it's not worth the stress.

mrsbyers · 20/12/2022 17:54

I’d pay it , you sent something that was the wrong size and not new

THisbackwithavengeance · 20/12/2022 17:57

It's a scam. Tell her to send it back. First it's the wrong size, then it's got bobbles now it's dirty?

Come on!

VisaGeezer · 20/12/2022 17:58

3 - 2 so far lol

Ask for it back and refund. It's not worth the hassle.

Dry cleaning doesn't always remove smells. I had a smelly coat dry cleaned twice and it still smelt.

She might not be happy with the clean.

VisaGeezer · 20/12/2022 17:59

I could swear it's not a 14.

I feel like asking to photograph the label and send it, but that doesn't solve the other issue.

It doesn't smell, I think i'd have noticed; but good point.

I had a buyer like this. I just said send it back, then she started saying she could keep it, just reduce the price. I just replied every time saying I don't want any buyers to be unhappy so send it back. I know I lost out as I paid the postage but like you I just wasn't happy with the remarks. I got it back and it was fine, I decided to keep it in the end.

Sorry, i meant it's not a 12.

did you ask her for photos of the size tag and bobbling?

Call her bluff. Tell her to request a return or a cancellation via eBay. Unless it's stretchy material, I can't imagine a size 14 been able to fit comfortably into a size 12 address. I think she's trying it on.

2bazookas · 20/12/2022 18:05

I'd guess it smells because she's worn it once, changed her mind and wants to return it for her money back.

Clothes shops get that scam all the time.

She'd trying to stiff you for the dry cleaning bill after she wore it.

zippitydoda · 20/12/2022 18:06

I think she had a 12, put in weight. Loved the dress and searched for it in a 14. Got lucky. Her 'old' dress is a 12 and bobbled, your dress is a 14.

londonmummy1966 · 20/12/2022 18:07

I think she's trying to scam you for a reduction tbh. If you have offered a return then ebay will not allow them to leave negative feedback and if they try you can get it removed. I had this once and whilst I was waiting for the negative feedback to be removed I put a note on all my sales items to say explain that it was someone who was being an arse and pointing out my extensive negative feedback and got a lot of buyers commenting on how annoying the scammers are so it didn't do me any harm.

VisaGeezer · 20/12/2022 18:12

There's another dress the same for sale on eBay, Size 12 ; which she says fits her ; it's £30 (used). Mine was £20.
It looks in considerably worse condition than mine.

Ok, that's good to know. I'll reiterate my offer of a return.

I'll have paid 6/7 on postage, which she's probably counting on being close to £10 so I just not bother, but for me it's the principle.

Yeah I'm wondering that too.

It's Boden, I don't know if they size large (?)

OP posts:
VisaGeezer · 20/12/2022 18:15

It's not stretchy, it's a structured tweed dress/pinafore.

BitFedUpTheNoo · 20/12/2022 18:19

They are totally trying it on for a discount. Ask for a photo of the size label and dispute the cleaning. Also offer a refund then you have been more than reasonable

ShandaLear · 20/12/2022 18:20

Yes, tell her to send it back for a refund. Don’t mess around and don’t engage in debate with her. Chances are she will keep it in the end. Some people are just cheeky fuckers. Just watch she doesn’t send you back a size 12 bobbly version!

If she really has another one, she'll just send me a pic of that label.
