Buyer wants me to pay for "dry cleaning"

I sold a dress I don't ever remember wearing as nwot.

I listed it as a 14 and could swear it was a 14 (however it's not impossible it had a small, hard to read size on the label and I got it wrong).

Buyer says it's got bobbles and is not new, and is a size 12, not 14.

I said, if it's a 12 I must have made a mistake, I apologise.

And that I don't remember wearing it and didn't notice any bobbling when listing. I said v sorry for disappointment/inconvenience - please request a return and I'll accept it

Buyer now says , if fits her in spite of being a 12. She's removed the bobbling. But she feels it smells stale (not mentioned in first message) and it will cost £10 to dry clean (it's a wool dress) and if I pay that, she'll keep it.

She says she's wanted that dress for a while (even though it's been in eBay for months before she bought it).

What do I do?

I had a buyer do similar with a pair of boots, all still new in the box. We traded a couple of emails arguing about condition, but I stayed firm to return and I'd refund. Nothing came of it and nothing was returned.

Aidagreenwhistle · 20/12/2022 18:24

This is why I never sell on eBay. I’d rather donate to charity then sell on eBay. So many con artists. I’d get it sent back. Why would it have to be sold as used. Surely she just tried it on?

THisbackwithavengeance · 20/12/2022 17:57

It's a scam. Tell her to send it back. First it's the wrong size, then it's got bobbles now it's dirty?

Come on!

THIS.

stellabella22 · 20/12/2022 18:28

Absolutely don't pay her anything. How ridiculous. She can either return and have a full refund or keep it how it is. So many people try to pull this shit on eBay. In future make sure you know the exact size and condition of an item before sending it so you're not doubting yourself. My guess is she picked up on your initial uncertainty and decided to see what she could get out of you.

Iceicebabytoocold · 20/12/2022 18:31

sorry, confused. You sold something as new and a size 14 but it is actually used and a size 12?

ZenNudist · 20/12/2022 18:32

BitFedUpTheNoo · 20/12/2022 18:19

They are totally trying it on for a discount. Ask for a photo of the size label and dispute the cleaning. Also offer a refund then you have been more than reasonable

This

Well that's what the buyer is saying!

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 20/12/2022 18:36

Stick to your guns and ask her to send if back. The line someone else posted about 'I don't want any customers to be unhappy' sounds good so go with that. She's trying it on, which is a pain but not much else you can do. Definitely don't give her any money.

jtaeapa · 20/12/2022 18:38

She’s just trying to squeeze cash out of you. Not sure what you can do about it. This kind of thing is why I stopped using eBay.

HimiJendrix · 20/12/2022 18:39

She will probably come back with oh, Ive just noticed that the hem is coming down or there is a button missing etc. She's trying it on. Definitely get it returned and refund her.

amylou8 · 20/12/2022 18:41

Tell her to send it back. Don't get into a discussion with her. 'Sorry the dress wasn't as expected, please raise a request to send it back for a refund.' I make a living selling used clothing on eBay. It's full of chancers. I can guarantee if it was the wrong size and there was bobbling you'd have had pictures of both. She chancing it for a partial.

pinneddownbytabbies · 20/12/2022 18:42

She's messing you around. Just say you want her to return the item and you will refund her.

I agree. Screams scam.

Yeah that's true, strange she didn't photograph the issues.

She's also only got 3 feedbacks.

She's quite confident for almost new eBayer.

Get her to return it.

been and done it. · 20/12/2022 18:50

I just sold a kenwood chef in excellent condition..it's hardly been used..hence my selling it. Evri delivered the package shot to pieces..a plastic unnecessary accessory was cracked. The buyer was adamant the condition wasn't as stated and she complained about the packaging..the item was surrounded by polystyrene and bubble wrap and wasn't damaged. She said the side of the bowl was 'rough' wtf? Ebay advised they were withholding funds until the matter was resolved. I was waiting for a refund myself so felt I had no option but to refund her. Its been returned to me today and I still have no idea why...3 other items have been lost in the post that I sent and have had to refund ..no doubt they'll eventually turn up but it's my loss. I've had it with Ebay selling.

I don't usually have problems, but I don't sell expensive items.

It might be worth your while selling something like that on FB marketplace etc.

You can demo it working, take a pic of the condition before they leave with it etc.

I think she had a 12, put in weight. Loved the dress and searched for it in a 14. Got lucky. Her 'old' dress is a 12 and bobbled, your dress is a 14.

This.

dooneyousmugelf · 20/12/2022 19:16

I think she's taking the piss, but sounds like you tried pulling a fast one yourself. You 'can't remember' wearing a dress so it must be new. Really? And you aren't sure what size it was. And you're unsure about whether it was bobbled because you 'didn't notice' any bobbling. Yet it wouldn't be bobbled if it was new.
Just insist on a refund and if she declines then leave it.

surreygirl1987 · 20/12/2022 19:20

There's another dress the same for sale on eBay, Size 12 ; which she says fits her ; it's £30 (used). Mine was £20.
It looks in considerably worse condition than mine.

Irrelevant.

Buyer has responded saying she'll just keep it, that she can see from the listing of the only other dress the same that I screenshotted; that she'd be paying the equivalent of the dry cleaning to get that dress plus the hassle of returning .... So.not irrelevant apparently.

I don't think I got the size wrong. It's not impossible but it's odd. The oy possibility would be it's a hard to read label which could be misconstrued.

You clearly have never met a shopholic if you don't understand how someone could not be sure if they ever wore something.

She's still saying she'd have thought I'd pay it as a goodwill gesture.

I had this bollocks on vinted. Offered return. She kept it.
