Buyer wants me to pay for "dry cleaning"

I sold a dress I don't ever remember wearing as nwot.

I listed it as a 14 and could swear it was a 14 (however it's not impossible it had a small, hard to read size on the label and I got it wrong).

Buyer says it's got bobbles and is not new, and is a size 12, not 14.

I said, if it's a 12 I must have made a mistake, I apologise.

And that I don't remember wearing it and didn't notice any bobbling when listing. I said v sorry for disappointment/inconvenience - please request a return and I'll accept it

Buyer now says , if fits her in spite of being a 12. She's removed the bobbling. But she feels it smells stale (not mentioned in first message) and it will cost £10 to dry clean (it's a wool dress) and if I pay that, she'll keep it.

She says she's wanted that dress for a while (even though it's been in eBay for months before she bought it).

What do I do?

I don't know what's going on.

I generally check items, especially wool items before listing (when I'm photographing them) and I'd have thought I'd have noticed "bobbling".

They’re taking the piss

She’s scamming you. I had this on Vinted. Sold an unworn pair of boots with a small manufacturing fault for a fraction of the RRP and the buyer tried it on saying they arrived scratched etc and weren’t new. Yeah sure they did, packed in the original box... I asked them to just return if they were unhappy but funnily enough they decided not to after all.

She's absolutely at it! Say no I'll just accept the return and refund you when it arrives.

I'd rather pay postage both ways as doesn't sound right to me.

I had one person on eBay say I had sold them a baby dress in the wrong size. I had said it was 12-18 months but actually it was 9-12 months. At first I thought was my fault, I was selling lots of baby stuff but I was thinking I'm sure it was 12-18 but well selling lots so must be my mistake. When I looked at the pics I'd taken u cld actually see the tag said 12-18 months. So I told them that and they never replied again! It was a dress from next that was no longer in the shops I think they needed the bigger size and were gonny get it at my expense. So it just shows u there is folk out there trying to scam u in all sorts of ways!

I had this on eBay, she wanted money off, got increasingly pushy, said it was wrong colour ? washed wrong - I had not worn or washed it, would not send photo, ended up eBay did not take my side but eventually got the dress back.

I really think it was scam attempt.

Tell her to send it back. She's pulling a fast one.

@been and done it.

One scam is when a buyer has a item that comes as a set, with different parts. But some of the parts are damaged or missing. The buyer buys the same item on eBay, takes out the parts they need to complete their original item, and then raises an Item Not as Describe case. They seller pays for the return postage, gets an incomplete set back, while the buyer has now completed their set at no cost to themselves at all.

I'm not saying this happened to you. For the items I sell I'd say that around 2% of the buyers are dishonest.

nauticant · 22/12/2022 08:08

Let's do that again, for @been and done it.

Blatant bare-faced scam. If there is no case and no formal return request then just ignore her.

Keep an eye out for poor feedback and challenge it if needed via eBay.
