Fees so high?

I made a post recently to say I was worse off after I sold an item. I don't really take notice of the fees. The item I've just sold was £10.00 they have taken £4.28. Had their few always been Fee percentage: 16.80% + £0.30 (VAT included)??

It's my only way of making money. I'm gutted.

That doesn't add up to £4.28. Is p & p included in that?

Or did you opt for a featured listing/gallery?

lashy · 13/09/2022 20:11

It's usually 12.8% + 30p for general, lower value items.
Might depend what type of item you were selling??

No I try to list for free. Never any extras. Apparently my performance is low which annoys he as I've sold for 16 years and never had this.

Also on another item it said the fee was based on £16. £6 of that was postage as it's heavy. Surely they can't take a fee on postage?

Am I not understanding it?

They charge fees on the postage, yes. Have done for a while. It was to stop people selling for 99p and then charging £10 postage to avoid paying fees back when they only charged on the sale price.
If you have a low rating they also charge more. Why is it low? Poor feedback?
I only sell on 80% off fees weekends now. It’s just not worth it.
You may find other selling platforms suit you better, if it’s your main source of income.

The item I've just sold was £10.00 they have taken £4.28.

That makes no sense. Was part of what they have “taken” postage? Or did you pay for extra features?

Cryingbutstilltrying · 13/09/2022 21:18

The total the fee was based on seems to be £16, sale price plus postage, if I’ve read the ops messages correctly. Which would be right if they are subject to the higher fee rate due to poor performance.
Yes it is a lot though.

She's ago they didn't take a percentage of postage at all and so people would offer items for sale with low starting bids and stupidly inflated postage costs - to minimums eBay's cut.
eBay cottoned on pretty quickly and then started charging their fee as a percentage of the whole sale value, including the postage costs, to circumvent those tactics. It penalised those who sold and applied correct postage fees (as they subsequently lost X% of the postage cost).
Grrr.

I can't believe they charge fees on postage.

I don't know why it's low to be honest. 100% positive yet one neutral (not sure how that works) because there was a hole in the pocket of a wool coat which she got for £5.

I hate eBay now. I've sold my kids toys and I wish I'd kept them for they money I got.
