paypal - what happens if you make payment to an incorrect email address?

I just did this and of course my balance has been reduced, and paypal say that although the person isn't registered with them they will send them an email telling them how to get their money

how do i cancel it?

I think if you log into your paypal account, there may be a cancel button next to the transfer somewhere I did this once. Can't remember how tho.
