PayPal return - help!

I bought something through PayPal (from facebook marketplace) that, one I received it, was really not as described. It was described as being in excellent condition and actually has really significant damage. I contacted the seller who has agreed to me returning it. I haven't ever been in this situation before and PayPal didn't answer my query, so can anyone answer these questions:

  1. do I return the item first, or does the seller refund me first?
  2. I can see that I should be able to activate some kind of free return thing through Paypal. However, does the seller have to refund the original postage cost?

Thanks

Did you make the payment to the Seller using the 'Payment for Goods' option or as a 'Family & Friends' payment?

If done correctly using the 'Payment for Goods' option you should be able to open a dispute for this purchase.

  1. Items should be returned first before a refund is processed - would send via a tracked service so you can upload the tracking details to the Paypal dispute.
  2. The full original payment should be refunded from the Seller, so would include the p&p paid.
