Clothes smelling of chemicals

I am going to have to stop buying clothes on eBay because everything I buy smells really strongly of chemical perfume. Ebay didn’t used to be like this! What are people using??? It’s such an offensive smell and it persists after several washes. It sets my asthma off too Sad any tips for getting the smell out?

I don't know but this morning I received a pair of jeans and they smell like someone's spilt a bottle of scent over them.
They are sinking my house out.

I'm going to have to return them.

It's not the first stinky item I've received. One of them was soaked in disinfectant and washed but still stank. I then tipped a bottle of tea tree oil over them and soaked and washed them twice and guess what they still smell of fabric conditioner.

I guess it is fabric conditioner as they usually have a slimy feel.

Yuk, yuk, yuk.

I really hate the smell of tea tree oil but that would be preferrable to that stale air freshener smell.

Any advice?

Put it in a bin bag with a load of bicarbonate of soda.

KirstenBlest · 09/07/2021 10:44

I don't have any. Smile

I don't really like the item anyway. It's Ok but just ok.
I don't need it and I don't want it in the house.

If its fabric softener you have to do multiple rinses then tumble dry to get the smell out. I've had stuff arrive that was described as 'freshly laundered' that had perfume all over the collar and cuffs, its really inconsiderate mo.

It’s actually put me off ever buying second hand clothes again which I try to do for environmental as well as £ reasons. I have shopped second hand on eBay for years this seems a recent problem

Yeah, had a coat turn up stinking of must and fabreze - sorted it out nicely.

ILoveShula · 09/07/2021 12:10

Good tip @QueenStromba.

Does anyone know which fabric conditioner it is? The smell truly is vile.

Brilliant I’ll remember the bicarbonate trick if I get tempted to buy anything on there again.
