Fraud on ebay.....

I've just been stung on eBay.

I've just checked my account and a seller in the States has used my eBay account to sell items and I've paid for the insertion fees. I've just reported it to eBay and asked that I get a refund. I've changed my password (so hopefully they can't do it again in the meantime) and I've ended both the items they were selling on my account.

They listed the items (tickets to see a football match and to go to a concert in Nevada) stating that if they want to purchase the items they are to email a guy in the States - as opposed to emailing the seller - ie me.

How infuriating.

I rec'd an email from eBay telling me that I was now eligible to become a Power Seller and I had to log on - this was obviously a scam and they've obtained my details from this.

I just can't believe this has happened. I've used eBay for quite a few years and this is the first time I've been 'done'.

Unbelievable. I'm in shock.

Hey Malo, check it out you have an answer!

MALO · 17/11/2007 23:40

What happened last year? Was it the same as me? ie someone has got into my account and listed items charging me their fees? How did you sort it out? Did you get your money back? HELP!!!

live chat sorted it. they sold mobile phones, listed 50 at the time, different mobiles, buy it now, at £50 each. I was in "my ebay", and I could see listing after listing appear. I ended auction, but they were quicker. then THEY changed the password, and kicked me out. Yes, they refunded everything, had to go through a thorough safety procedure after to gain access to my account.

Also, you may want to install antispyware, as you now may have a keystroke logger on your pc. DO NOT go to online banking or anything that requires password or contain personal information, and do not set up your new ebay password until you have run antispyware.

Get on to ebay live chat now. And if there is any advice you need regards to ebay, the community boards are THE BEST, there are people there devoted to answer newbies. (I used to be one of them, but I have not used ebay much since I closed my ebay shop in spring, so I am not totally uptodate)

QuintessentialShadow · 17/11/2007 23:49

Hey Malo, a trusted oldtimer has come up with this link dedicated to hijakced accounts

MALO · 18/11/2007 00:49

If you receive an email telling you you are now eligible for a Power Seller status....don't reply to it. Despite it claiming to come from eBay with the eBay logo etc etc it is a SPAM email.

I did. I replied giving my email address and my password into my eBay account.

Today I had my account used by a third party listing items for sale which I paid the fees for.

I have now spent the last hour on a live help site sorting this out (thank you QS).

EVERYONE: PLEASE BE CAREFUL. xxxxx

I am glad you got it sorted. I too was shocked when it happened to me. But I was on the community boards a lot, so I knew about most of the different scams, and the different precautions, like never reply to emails from ebay (go to "my messages" and check as it will be there if it is legitimate), never click on links in emails, as it is most probably a fraudulent microsite set up to catch account name and password, etc.... Yet, I got hijacked.

Dont let this put you off ebay, but be vigilant. Have a read in the Trust and Safety, and the Security Center, familiarize yourself with the scams, and you will most likely be fine.... I can' believe I say that...
