Selling an expensive handbag

meg54 · 07/05/2021 07:20

I am selling a Chanel handbag for a friend who has found herself in dire straits.
It is unused and I have confirmed it's authentic (bought form a police proceeds of crime auction).
I have been warned away from ebay, as it is a massive scammers site when it comes to designer stuff.
I have looked at specialist sites but the commission is around 30% of the sale price!
Can anyone give me some advice on how to sell, or in the case of Ebay, how to minimise the risk of fraud?
Thanks.
Meg.

Avoid ebay like the plague. I wouldn't use it for a high end item. I can't suggest an alternative though as I don't have any high end items Grin

There's a FB site called Handbag Hideaway where you'd be able to sell this kind of thing.

AllHallowsEve14 · 07/05/2021 07:24

What about vinted? I've never used it but I think it's for that sort of thing.

MilduraS · 07/05/2021 07:26

I wouldn't trust an expensive handbag on eBay. There are too many fraudsters shilling fake versions so I wouldn't be able to spot a genuine Chanel handbag. I've used Vestaire Collective in the past because they authenticate all of the pieces that are being sold. The fees are higher for sellers because of this but I think you'd get a much better price than eBay anyway.

How about NPN bags?

MrsPatrickDempsey · 07/05/2021 07:46

I second a group on Facebook. There are probably specific Chanel ones.

meg54 · 07/05/2021 14:57

Thanks all. I had a look at Vinted, but they got appalling feedback.
Some of the more expensive sites look goog, but they would have taken £750 commission!!
Had a quick look at NPN, but the don't quote the commission up front - just a very coy "you could get up to 90% of the value of your bag".
I will check out handbag hideaway.

Certainly wouldn't sell anything expensive for someone else. If it all goes tits up will you pay your friend?

Thelnebriati · 07/05/2021 21:24

I'd refuse to do a favour like this, its very easy for things to go wrong and you'd have to refund the buyer.
Even if you post the item using fully tracked, if it was lost in the post you'll probably have to refund the buyer before you got a refund from the Post Office.

I have sold mulberry handbags on various mulberry groups on Facebook. I’m sure there will be similar ones for Chanel. They are closed groups where the moderators are pretty clued up to what’s genuine and what’s not. You buy through PayPal so there are fees associated with that, but you get more than you would selling through third parties.
Maybe check out Chanel selling groups on facebook

I wouldn’t….. it would be far too easy for someone to claim it was fake then return a fake (keeping the real one) for a refund.

I agree.

Op, support your friend by all means - but she must sell the bag herself. A whole Chanel bag is an awful debt to be in if it all goes tits up.

Chattycatty · 08/05/2021 23:56

Couldn't you say pick up only then cash buyer then there would be no way they could say its fake or it wasn't delivered, and would skip PayPal.

meg54 · 10/05/2021 08:07

Thanks all. i have no qualms about selling the bag on behalf of my friend.
I checked out Handbag Hideaway, but they are not taking any new members at the moment, but I left them a message anyway so fingers crossed.
Thanks for the advice.
Meg.

How about 1stDibs? They do a lot of higher end stuff

flashylamp · 10/05/2021 08:10

It is unused and I have confirmed it's authentic

Do you have written confirmation?

PegasusReturns · 10/05/2021 08:15

Vestaire?

They independently authenticate.

Whichever way you look at it you’re going to pay a big commission.

Scoose · 10/05/2021 08:15

Try 1stDibs or hardlyeverwornit

JellyBabiesFan · 13/05/2021 19:45

If you do continue to use ebay then to limit your risk

  1. Post with the signed for delivery service and make it clear you will be doing this in the description
  2. Take a shed load of photos including one of the bag in situ before you close the parcel
  3. Block bidders with low feedback if this is still possible
  4. Clearly state no refunds in the description
Henlie · 13/05/2021 19:49

I think ebay is fine to sell through, as long as you say it’s Collection Only. And cash on collection - no paypal etc.
