Ebay newbie: cash vs paypal

scarcelyodd · 20/04/2021 10:25

I'm selling a large item collection only and someone has offered a reasonable price if they can buy & collect today (auction closes at the weekend). Is it better to get cash on collection or to go via ebay/paypal? Which gives me better protection? Thanks!

PayPal gives better protection

Cash - PayPal gives better protection for the buyer, if someone pays on PayPal they can easily claim item not received for a package

BanningTheWordNaice · 20/04/2021 10:28

Even if you get them to sign a piece of paper saying they’d received it in the condition advertised etc, PayPal is really dodgy for collection items for the seller.

SlipperyLizard · 20/04/2021 10:30

Cash only, never PayPal for collection items as you’ll have no proof the buyer has received it if they later raise a dispute claiming they haven’t.

RedMarauder · 20/04/2021 10:31

Cash for things that are collection only.

Escapetothecuntry · 20/04/2021 10:33

Cash on collection never PayPal.

scarcelyodd · 20/04/2021 10:35

OK, that seems pretty unanimous! Cash it is. Presumably I should get the buyer to sign a receipt? Do I add something about them being happy with the condition?

Always go for cash if you're the seller, PayPal if you're the buyer, if there's a choice.

If you do a Cash on Collection purchase, then it's no different to an old-skool classified ad in the newspaper deal.

Buyer shows up, if what they see is what they expected to buy, they hand over the cash, you hand over the goods, end of!

Sell it without using eBay. Just give buyer your address

Sell it without using eBay. Just give buyer your address
You can't just send your address to the buyer via eBay without getting yourself banned. The messages are monitored and any sign of an address, email address or phone number will automatically be picked up.
