Ebay and my idiot boyfriend!

Hi wise mumsnetters,

DP sold his old iPhone for £100 yesterday and posted it straight away. However.. after the sale the buyer messaged him asking him to send it to a different address which like an idiot he did. The buyer has then opened a PayPal dispute saying the transaction wasn't recognised. All DP has been able to do in response is submit his tracking info which of course is to an address not on this guy's PayPal account. Has anybody had experience of this? I was thinking surely if the buyer has actually had his account hacked or is pretending this is the case why would DP lose his money too, as this isn't his fault, but then I also know PayPal will probably look at it and just rule that DP sent the phone to the wrong address. He uses ebay managed payments so the money is now on hold.

Your boyfriend is indeed an idiot and should have his ebay privileges taken away. The scammers would have been ringing their success bell.

Number 1 rule, never send to a different address

Yeah you have to send to the item to the address on the transaction, if they got the address wrong the seller needs to refund and they can pay again. No leg to stand on here

I know! Argh so cross with him. He rarely ever sells anything on ebay but still..lesson learned.

One thing he can try is to phone the sorting office near the address, and ask them to look out for the parcel with that tracking number as he's been scammed.
They probably won't agree to return to sender without trying to deliver it but its worth a try.

It's probably been delivered by now, he asked for 2nd class signed for and the cashier ended up sending it next day guaranteed so he's down about £7 for postage too! Not sure how he let that one slide either. I despair!

You can't do that!

Once something is in the postal system you can't ask them not to deliver it. Most of Mumsnet think it's illegal to open a letter that's not addressed to you, they'd be horrified at your suggestion

I know, that's why I said they wouldn't agree to return it without trying to deliver it.
But if they are out and the postie has to put a card through the door, can the sorting office insist on them showing ID if they try to collect?
