I'm paying for a tent in cash. What should I beware of?

I'm going to pick it up tomorrow. I've said I want a written receipt. I think I'll take one pre printed.
Anything else I should be aware of? Should I take a selfie of me handing over the cash?

What are you worried about?

confusednortherner · 17/04/2021 21:48

It's a second hand tent, I buy and sell on Facebook and eBay pay what you've agreed and you take your chance it's as good as you hope. If I want a new one with a guarantee I'd buy from a shop.
What exactly are you thinking might be a issue??

drspouse · 17/04/2021 21:49

I think that they will claim I didn't pay.

Then they would be stupid for having handed over tent. Could PayPal once there if not

Fruitteatime · 17/04/2021 21:54

I wouldn't bother with a used tent, in my experience they leak.

Hollyhocksarenotmessy · 17/04/2021 21:55

If you pay by cash instead of through ebay, you aren't covered by their disputes process. It also wont record your payment. Why cash? Pay through ebay from your phone on collection.

Will you see the tent up before you buy it so you can check the condition?

If you are collecting then it doesn't matter, they can't then send you the goods so even if they did claim you didn't pay you could easily then turn round and say they didn't send the tent. Cash on collection for an ebay sale is fine.
YumYumApplePie · 17/04/2021 22:01

When you collect stuff on eBay, you as the buyer will have been Sent a barcode. The seller will need to scan this, to prove it's been collected.

EssentialHummus · 17/04/2021 22:03

What justfor said. Presumably you have a trail of correspondence agreeing time and place for pickup, and you’ll send another tomorrow saying you’re on your way or whatever. I can’t see how this could be used against you.

drspouse · 17/04/2021 22:05

That's good.

How much is this flipping tent costing that you're so stressed about it? Taking a selfie of yourself paying is INSANE.

So what?

It's discontinued but fairly new. I will check it's all there and goes together.

So do new ones if not erected properly.

Regardless, leaks in a tent are easy to fix, and if you want to use a tent over a number of years, you'd need to rewaterproof regularly whether you buy new or used.

The seller has nothing to gain by claiming you haven't paid - I think that's an unecessary concern.

For me, if I was buying a used tent, while I wouldn't need to see it erected, I'd want to check all the poles were present and check the canvas for any rips and general condition.

Note - missing poles aren't the end of the world, nor are small holes as both easily repaired - depends on how big a discount you're getting.

NB, a sellers concern over stuff like this (which is why they are probably asking for cash) is that if you paid with Paypal, YOU could claim you hadn't collected and 9 times out of 10, you'd win the case - I've seen claims go against sellers even when they had photographic proof of collection. Basically PP isn't designed for this kind of transaction which is essentially a web-aided type of local classified ad.

So I shouldn't worry about that side of things - just check it's worth what you're paying for it :)

Firstly we sold an amazing tent cash as it was taking up so much space but was like £600 of tent we sold for £200 and it was v well looked after!!

Secondly we've bought lots on marketplace ash and not asked for a receipt and no issues whatsoever so......
