How rubbish are Hermes, and how to avoid as a buyer?

I've made 7 purchases in the past 2 weeks. ON each occasion when courier has been Hermes they have failed to knock on the door (when we've been in) and instead leave a note directing us to a neighbour, who is currently on nights.)
Using their automated process to complain is pointless - they fail to recognise the delivery code, and simply say "its been delivered".

as a buyer, is there a way to avoid Hermes, from ebay purchases?

Following with interest. Other than asking the seller via ebay, I'm not sure if there is? Do they sometimes say first class post/second class on the sale? I thought I'd seen that at some point.

How rubbish are they depends on where you live and the individual delivering I suppose. Here I’m happy to have Hermes, DPD and Yodel because they’re all familiar with the local area and are reliable. FedEx, DHL and City Link all bloody awful. But as to how you avoid them, just ask the seller to use a different method, because using Hermes is likely to result in the parcel not being delivered. Some will oblige but some won’t if they have an ac or it’s cheaper etc. I’d ask before bidding if it’s that much of an issue.

Ah, thanks - I thought it may be a local issue - that it's pretty hit and miss. It is weird though - not using our door knocker, but then mithering our neighbour.
When it's been Royal Mail, no problem. Not had DHL or any of the others yet.
Next time I bid I will ask before hand - if it means paying more then so be it. I can see my neighbours refusing to take stuff in eventually.

I use my hermes as a seller and there is a part to put in a note from the buyer, or useful instructions. So you could email the seller and ask them to include your mobile Number and instructions not to leave at Number 24 for example.

Hermes is 30p cheaper than Royal Mail 2nd class for < 1 kg right now. It's a lot difference on small value sales.

Err please don't do this.

A seller CANNOT instruct Hermes to NOT leave a parcel at a neighbour.

If a higher-rate postage option is chosen, then YOU can be given the option by Hermes to specify where you want the parcel delivered to, but that may not be something the seller offers.

The best thing to do is to leave a note on your door asking them NOT to call at that particular neighbour.

i ordered a plushie that dd wanted with her pocket money and its being delivered by hermes , i say delivered because its now over 6 days late , all it says from them is its been delayed and when i phoned them this afternoon all i got was the robot womans voice asking me to give them the tracking no and my address followed by her telling me its delayed . no option to speak to an actual human at all !! slightly worried im never going to get this parcel and i dunno what to do next , robot voice did say to ring their customer no for any other queries , but the only no avaliable is the one on the email . just have to say im not very impressed by them at all

Our Hermes guy is great but think it’s hit or miss as to the service you get.
Dhl recently delivered an expensive parcel to my boyfriends patio he was with his mum for a week so when he got home the parcel had gone - also delivered it to wrong address billing instead of delivery as knew he’d not be there.
Royal Mail left a parcel on the tree stump at side of my front door..apparently that’s a safe place where the entire street and neighbours can see it. Dpd ripped my gate off it was tied shut at the back (beside 2 double gates that open fine) he cut the cable ties. It was due to be fixed to the ground as had come loose.
Beggars belief he thought cutting ties would be ok.

You have a knocker rather than a door bell? Maybe they just tap and you don't hear, I wouldn't think they want to go leaving with a neighbour. They are under a lot of pressure to deliver masses of parcels in a set time, going to an neighbour is taking longer.

Our Hermes man is great, by some couriers we have refuse to press those video doorbells and some tap the door here rather than ring the bell, so I don't always hear, by my dog does. They only give you one nano second usually.
