Buyer paid by Paypal for collection only item

Can anyone advise me? I've just sold an item where I asked for cash on collection only but they paid immediately by Paypal.
Is it best for me to cancel the sale and then relist it so that they can make an offer, which I then accept?
I can't refund the money from my Paypal account as it's on hold as I'm a new seller.
Any advice much appreciated.

Hi I did this and automatically paid without thinking.

The seller had to cancel the purchase and I paid cash.

Cant you accept payment via PayPal and they can still collect?

corlan · 03/01/2021 19:05

I'm just worried that they can claim the item was not received and get a Paypal refund.
Did the seller relist the item once they cancelled it.How did you work it out?

As a seller, eBay does not allow you to accept cash only. The buyer is within their rights to insist on paying electronically. To cancel the sale you will probably have to lie about the reason, and you'll still get a defect and the seller can still leave negative feedback.

And yes, buyers can quite easily scam sellers and eBay usually sides with the con-artist buyers.

No they cancelled but I still collected the item.

They can't put a claim in as it's their own fault for paying for an item and not collecting.

Can you write a receipt and get them to sign it when they collect? So you can prove it was delivered? Or do like the delivery drivers do and take a photo of them with it on collection?

corlan · 03/01/2021 19:23

Thanks for the advice. The buyer seems happy to cancel, so I've just done that. I should have stuck to Gumtree!

For reference, this will not work if a claim is opened, it is not accepted as proof, neither is videoing someone.

The only way is to accept cash on collection and ensure the buyer checks the item carefully before taking it, although they can still be an arse and lie about it being not as described to try for a refund.

eBay now give the buyer a QR code which you can ask them to show you, and scan it on your phone under the 'mark item dispatched' tab. I assume this is to get over the scam of claiming they didn't get it when it was collected in person. If you've physically scanned their code on your phone then they can't claim they weren't there collecting the thing! I have used this a few times without issues. In the past I have also taken pictures of the person collecting, but obv they don't have to agree to this.

I think this is why you should always send tracked or signed for and charge for it. That way, no one can accuse you of not posting when you have proof of delivery and signature (or weird photograph at the moment!). It’s the sellers responsibility until it is in the hands of the buyer, so it’s always best to be safe. X

I've read that it's a common scam. They should have paid the way as instructed in your listing. Id be really wary here. Was it for much money. But maybe that new app would be sufficient proof.

louise4745 · 03/01/2021 20:15

How common is it to pay cash though? I've always paid immediately when I've bought something and that goes for the odd time its been cash in collection. It's just a habit.

CorianderBee · 03/01/2021 21:49

Ask them to let you take a photo of them taking it.

I've often put no PayPal - cash on collection only and ebay has never had an issue.

This is a new option for items to be collected and works really well. I've sold several collection only items using this over the last few months.
