I am sure there have been similar threads before, but not sure they cover the same situation exactly, so Ebay experts help would be very gratefully received. Bidding on a piece of excercise equipment, collection very localy only, due to size. If I win, which is actually doubtful, as someone seems determined to outbid me :) I would pay by paypal, but I seem to remember there could be an issued over the collection, in that there is a technicality which could go against me? I'm not talking about covid, and would get a courier if need be, but am I imagining this? I'm a bit sleep-deprived, so please excuse if I'm not explaining this well. TIA.

If you collect, then pay cash on collection. Don't pay pal and collect.

Mrsmorton · 01/01/2021 13:21

But it's the seller who's protected by this OP, stops you saying you didn't receive the item and recalling your PayPal payment.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 01/01/2021 13:29

Ok, so if I pay cash, can they raise a claim for non payment on ebay, and get black marks on my account for messing about, as it were? I realise no one could prove I'd actually collected it or not, unless they filmed it, :) Apologise for EbayStupid, just never done this before but my fat a**e needs it :)

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz why wouldn’t you use PayPal to pay? Pay in cash and the buyer has zero protection if the item isn’t as described or is faulty etc?

apeneu · 01/01/2021 13:32

There would be no reason for them to say you haven't paid if you've given them cash, however it's a well known scam for people to pay by PayPal, collect an item and then claim they never got it and get their money back and the item. Therefore most people don't allow PayPal for collection items.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 01/01/2021 15:33

Thanks for your help everyone. I did wonder why someone would say you hadn't paid, but in a corner of my brain I had heard a friend of a friend of next door's dog who had a problem with it for some reason... In many ways it would make sense to pay cash. I can see the item, and not turn up to an address that doesn't exist, or engage a courier on a wild goosie.

But if you are collecting in person then that's the point you check it is what you thought and that it works.

We've sold several items as "cash on collection" and I always write out a receipt in an old fashioned receipt book (with carbon paper) which we both sign as proof of payment and collection.
I got my receipt book from the Post Office Smile

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 01/01/2021 18:59

Actually that's a good idea @LookToTreblesGoingTreblesGone. I have one of those! Somewhere in the dark corners of my desk. Thanks all.

If you pay cash on collection instead of PayPal then the seller gets to keep more of the money.

Pay cash and eBay gets 10% + 20p in fees
Pay by PayPal and the seller is charged another 3.4% fees

usedandabusedx1000 · 01/01/2021 19:41

@JustLikeStitch if you pay by PayPal and the collect - the seller is at risk. Because the only way they can prove you received the item is by proof of postage which they do not have, so if I paid for a car on eBay by sending 2k via PayPal, then go and collect the car, when I get home I tell eBay they didn’t send it and I’d get my money back and the seller has no comeback! I sell cars on eBay a lot and alllllllways get scammers telling me they are going to pay by PayPal then send a courier - no chance!

Thanks. It was bid way above my allowed budget for it, but good tips for next time.

If you use a sniping program to place your highest bid at the last few seconds you won't be pushing the price up so much. Auctionstealer is a good one.
