what happens when a payment has been cancelled by seller through paypal but the money has still been taken from my bank account, does it go straight to my paypal account instead?

Yes, it goes into your paypal account but it does take a few days following it's exit from your bank account. You can have paypal pay it back into your back account if you like for a small charge of 25p.
