Debt collection letter for unpaid fees but don't have an eBay account?

I've received a letter from a debt collection agency regarding unpaid eBay sellars fees.

Twist is I don't have an eBay account and have never bought anything from eBay never mind selling anything?

Correct address and letter checks out with the agencies website apart from the phone number. Bank details for payment are correct so I think the letter is legit but I can't owe money on an account I've never had!

I've requested my credit report but won't get it for a least 7 days probably longer with Christmas etc?

Any ideas are have I been scammed somehow

You can check your credit score online

If the number checks out I'd say it's a scam.
You can try a free credit check you should be able to view the info sooner?

Tried the link above and it says it can't verify me! Now starting to get worried 🙁

Speak to EBay directly. They are very helpful. I once had a fake auction registered on my account and to be my address. eBay were very helpful in resolving.

@MotherFeeder - speak to eBay rather than the debt collection agency? They say in their letter that it's nothing to do with eBay any longer

Don't debt collection agencies just look for anyone who might possibly be the debtor though? My parents were getting debt collection letters for 'me' at one time addressed to Mr Sam Surname (I'm very much female!). We just ignored them but no idea if that's the sensible thing to do.

MotherFeeder · 21/12/2020 06:52

I was thinking you may want some proof from eBay you don't have an account.

I would just call the debt collector and explain. I've received letters from debt collectors regarding previous tenants who have left electricity arrears and explained the situation. They've wiped the debt and it's no mark on my name.

Spoke to the debt collection agency today and they have put a mark on the case as possible fraud and passed it onto their investigations department. Haven't asked me for any evidence as yet but said they would come back to me if they find anything else out or need further info.

EBay link accounts registered at the same address. Worth checking if this could be your partner or child's account? Or possibly a previous resident at your property.
