Is this a scam?

I won an item on ebay this morning and paid straight away (£300, so not small change). Seller then messaged me to say ebay had used an old email address for her PayPal and so the listing showed I'd paid but the money hadn't arrived in her PayPal or bank account. I checked my PayPal and it showed that there was no PayPal account for the email address I'd used. I cancelled the transaction (in case someone quickly set up a PayPal account using that email address and claimed the money). I told the seller what had happened, sent a screen grab and said if she relisted it, I'd buy it straight away.

She said she spoke to ebay and they saidthr problem was at ebay's end and it would take a few days to rectify. She said she was told to invoice me through PayPal, which she did. I was a little suspicious as I know ebay doesn't like purchases to take place outside ebay (more because they don't get their cut that way I suppose). I called ebay myself to check whether that was legit and the woman I spoke to said that she should invoice me through ebay, not PayPal and that I should check with PayPal that I would be covered if it does turn out to be a scam.

I've checked the PayPal Protection smallprint and I might have a problem if it's a scam because it doesn't cover machinery for manufacturing. The item is a domestic appliance but I would be using it for my business so PayPal could to to wriggle out of coughing up if it came to that.

Has anyone experienced ebay using the seller's wrong PayPal email address? Is this a scam? What should I do?

Sounds very suspicious to me. How can eBay use the wrong address, when the sellers input the details? Walk away.

NeopreneMermaid · 29/11/2020 15:30

I can't get through to PayPal support to check I'd be covered.

I'd give up on that item and start looking again.

If in doubt leave it. If it was a small amount of money Id take the change but not for £300. It all sounds very dodgy

SadSecretSanta · 29/11/2020 15:34

I wouldn’t risk £300. Leave it.

NeopreneMermaid · 29/11/2020 15:44

It was already a risk as it was listed as broken (but the bit that has broken I'm pretty sure I can get fixed). The advice from ebay was a bit ambivalent and seemed to suggest - but not confirm - that ebay could have used an old email address.

Maybe I should just say I'm happy to wait until ebay has resolved the issue and I'll wait for it to be relisted.

Oh wait, it's been resolved by ebay and relisted so I've bought it. Apparently it was legit.

Oh good. Hope you can fix it then! Smile

Just popped back to say it's arrived and is so far working perfectly so apparently ebay using the wrong email for your PayPal account can actually happen. Thanks all for your advice. Every day's a school day.

We’ve managed to do something like this before 🙈 well I say we, it was DH as I don’t know how to use eBay. It somehow connected to my PayPal (that was an old account that I never used) and DH rang me in a panic saying I needed to do this that and the other to try to get into my PayPal account. What he didn’t explain was that all I needed to do was log in to my PayPal and he’d assumed I didn’t know my password, but I did 🙈 so after a huge drama it was all Ok 😂.
