Buyer saying item is worn

Can I get some advice please? I sold some new trousers with labels attached. The buyer says that they smell of washing powder and that I’ve unthreaded a label - I sold them as brand new with tags and took photos of the tags attached. Not sure how I could’ve washed them and kept the labels attached. They say they are willing to settle without having to escalate. I’ve replied and said send them back and I’ll refund as they’re definitely not worn and I can return them to the shop we still have the receipt. Can I just check this is ok please? I’ve not sold much on eBay and don’t know how to handle this - they’ve not requested a return or replied to messages yet.

They don't want to escalate because it's a lie. I would tell them to return at their own cost with all labels in tact.

Yes this is fine what you've said here. Don't let it put you off eBay most people are totally fine using eBay xx

Thanks for replying so quickly.

why didn't you just return to the shop in the first place?

Was wondering the same.

Hope you got it sorted OP.

They were a present so I had a gift receipt and it’s not really a shop I’d buy anything from - gym kit. The buyer hasn’t made a claim or returned as yet.

Sometimes I sell things with tags on eBay because I've lost the receipt or it's a ball ache to return them to the shop. Doesn't mean I'm shady. People can sell whatever they like you know.
Sexnotgender · 15/09/2020 18:02

Definitely fine, they’re angling for a partial refund.

OP - It's a ball ache to return items to the shop to get a refund but not to list them and sell them on ebay?

Makes no sense

I’ve got an account where I sell lots of things on eBay - it takes me 15 minutes to take a couple of photos and write the listing.

I wouldn’t go in a shop right now unless there was absolutely no other option.

OP - ask the buyer to put in a return request via eBay. Don’t offer to settle. eBay does normally side with the buyer but if you have photos of the item with the tags on, you may have a good chance of avoiding having to pay return postage.

If eBay insists you pay return postage, issue the buyer with a pre-paid label, which they have to print and attach to the item for return. It’s cheaper than Royal Mail and is tracked, so if she says she’s posted it and hasn’t, you will be able to tell.

How so?

I often sell things on eBay. It takes a couple of minutes at most to complete the listing on my phone and then a 5 minute walk to the nearest Post Office to send anything I sell.

If I had to return something to a store I’d have a 20 mile round trip to my nearest big city and if like the OP says the item is for a store she doesn’t use and she only has a gift receipt (so would be getting store credit rather than a refund) it makes perfect sense to try and sell the item instead Confused

OP, what you’ve offered the buyer is fine.
