I am being told to return the item but I already have

In June I ordered a chair off eBay. When it arrived the wood was split. I requested to return the item and was given a returns label to print. I then had to take the huge box to a hermes place and posted it back using their returns label.

I have had no refund so opened a case and eBay said I need to return the item which I had already done. I had told them this but they didn't acknowledge it. I have pointed out to the seller that they should be able to track my return given I used their return label. The problem is I can't see what I can do now. There doesn't seem to be any way I can tell eBay that I have already posted it as when I go to the case it just says post the item. Unfortunately I seem to have island the little slip I got from the newsagent with a bar code on.

Any idea what I can do now?

Do you still have the tracking receipt?
I find their messaging service worse than useless but phoning usually works.

No I have lost the receipt. But my understanding was that given I posted it back with their Hermes label they should be able to tell I posted it? I assumed they could track?

If you go to Hermes, and can tell them the time and date you did this, that would likely get you the tracking.

Did you open a case in the first place? What’s the seller saying?

Seller says need return receipt although I thought they’d be able to track.

Your receipt is your proof it was posted though. The printing of the returns label is not proof of posting. Any tracking would have to be done by the person who posted it I.e. You

Your receipt is the only proof you have that you posted it. As you have lost it you will need to go to Hermes for proof.

Then contact eBay. You do go round in circles until they eventually give you the option to phone and the number to dial!
