Collection only with paypal - help please

I'm trying to sell a piece of furniture on ebay. There was a mistake in my listing which added a small postage amount although description says buyer to collect. Buyer has paid by paypal including the postage. I have contacted them to arrange collection suggesting I refund the paypal and they pay cash (minus the error postage charge) but I have not heard back yet. Buyer is not in UK , has good feedback from some similar items bought in UK (which they have collected) and other mixed feedback too. As I haven't sold for a while via ebay, funds are being held by ebay so a refund isn't straightforward, I think I will need to cancel the transaction, with the buyer's agreement? I've made a real mess of this, I was planning to just pay back the postage in cash as it's v small but that was before I realised the risk around paypal for collected items, (I've paid that way myself without problems so it never occurred to me). I need some advice before the buyer contacts me please - can't find anywhere on ebay to help

Your not really protected either way. I wouldn't let anyone collect as they'll claim they never recieved the item and you'll have to refund them anyway

That's why I am asking for cash on collection instead. Nothing back from buyer at all yet and I can't seem to cancel the transaction. I suppose I just have to wait to hear from them. What if they insist on paypal? The non contact is making me a bit dubious to say the least although feedback does say fast to pay slow to collect.

When you say you can’t seem to cancel the transaction, what’s stopping you?

They can’t insist on PayPal. Even if they do, you refund it to them then there’s no sale.

TrafalgarSquare · 08/06/2020 13:57

Because I'm a new seller so the funds are on hold

They are not going to come and collect something from another country in the middle of the pandemic though, are they? You will need to refund them when you can and probably relish. They obviously bought it because it showed postage.

carexfairex · 08/06/2020 14:01

*relist, not relish Blush

Menaimum · 08/06/2020 14:12

If someone actually comes from another country to collect in person then they will pay the full amount including postage through PayPal and you simply send them back a couple of quid privately through PayPal or hand them the cash. It would be like giving change surely? But it's more likely they expecting you to ship so just message saying error on your part with revised shipping amount and wait for them to answer. They'll either way no thanks or yes please. If yes please...relist as a buy it now with correct shipping and give them the item number and hope they buy it again.

Ring PayPal and explain, then message buyer by eBay
There probably in bed time zone

Menaimum · 08/06/2020 14:14

And limit how long they have to collect before you relist as presumably you're selling it to make room, you're not offering a storage facility while you wait til they can travel.

carexfairex · 08/06/2020 14:15

@Menaimum

No. The buyer can claim they didn't get they item and PayPal would refund.

TrafalgarSquare · 08/06/2020 15:20

No, they have an agent here in UK to collect. Other feedback bears this out and is positive. Buyer definitely is expecting to collect - has been in touch to arrange - can't pay cash. It looks legit as far as I can see it's just that Paypal's a massive risky loophole for sellers I hadn't realised about when I listed. Well, I should say ebay is rather than Paypal. Paypal revised its terms for collected items in 2016, but with ebay it's still a grey area, apparently.
