Postal services other than Signed for

I usually sell on eBay using Signed for postal services only, but I'd like to sell some cheaper things - can I just use normal 1st / 2nd class post? I suppose I don't want to leave myself open to CFs 😄.

If it’s a small parcel then when you post second or first class (not signed for), there will be a reference number on the proof of postage. You can enter this online and it will let you know when the item has been delivered.

If a buyer claims non delivery, and the online update shows otherwise, this will be enough for the case to be closed out in your favour.

The only thing to note is that non signed for only covers you up to £20 should the item be lost / damaged in transit, whereas signed for is up to £50.

Also be aware that in order to make a claim against Royal Mail they want proof of how much the item cost you originally, not how much it was sold for on eBay... If you cannot prove that then they'll only give you the equivalent of several stamps (can't remember exactly the number - may have been a book of 6 1st class). Not a problem with a really low value item obviously.
