Sign up to a snipe service. This will then put your bid in the last few seconds, minimising the chance of anyone else counter-bidding (assuming you snipe at above anyone else's maximum).

I use www.auctionsniper.com, although there are others. Basic sniping (i.e. about 10 seconds before) is available for free for up to a few snipes per month. More than that, and you have to pay.
