Don't want to waste money on recorded if the proof of posting receipt does the job anyway??

No, the recorded actually tracks the parcel for you, receipts just give I think the cost of postage and the postcode that it is going to.
Whether you pay extra for recorded depends upon whether you can afford the risk of the person at the other end saying it didn't arrive and the money being taken from your paypal account.

If the person at the other end doesn't receive it they can claim their money back from your paypal account if you can't provide a tracking number. You are then out of pocket as Royal Mail will not accept a claim until after a certain time period has elapsed (I think it's 15 days but not sure). Until then, you have to cover the cost of refunding buyer. Paypal WILL refund the buyers money if you can't provide tracking reference which you don't get on a proof of posting.
