I buy lots on ebay. I'm not happy with a purchase and out of goodwill I don't mind paying to return it as the seller originally didn't wa to pay for any return postage.
They've asked me to return the item then they will refund me.
Am I best to do it through ebay then pay them the postage?

Why are you unhappy with the item? If it's not how it was described in the listing then you can get the seller to pay for the return. If on receiving it you've decided it wasn't what you wanted then you can contact the seller via eBay and ask whether they would accept a return and offer to pay for the cost of the postage. They might refuse though.

ALWAYS keep all returns through eBay.
Your post is a bit confusing. Are you talking about returning as item that isn’t faulty?
If so request a return through eBay and select a reason such as “changed my mind” or something similar. Then when the seller accepts a return you can purchase a returns label through eBay and everything will be logged, so the seller can’t say there haven’t received the item ect
