Selling a high-value item - avoiding scammers?

DH wants to sell a watch worth around £500 on ebay.

I haven't used it for a while, and wondered if someone could advise about avoiding scammers as I know this can be a risky thing to do.

Should he just insist on cash on collection?

Thanks

Generally eBay is a safe selling platform, however there’s always a risk of scammers to some degree.

You could specify cash on collection only but then you’re narrowing your market to the small amount of buyers who are willing to travel to your local area to collect it.

Would it not be easier to sell it to a local jeweller?

A good idea to see what the watch is actually “worth” is to search for similar items and then filter to the results to “sold items”, and you will see what they have sold for, then compare it to any offers made by a jeweller that buys and sells used watches.

Thanks Lottie. We've done that research already.

DH already got a valuation on the watch from a specialist, but it was substantially lower than what the watches sell for on eBay so that's why he wants to try and sell it there.

At least he knows the minimum value.
