Brought pair of shoes today. Listing says contact me to advise of payment method (despite giving paypal as only option). We pay by paypal anyway.

Get a warning saying account not currently valid (or something like that). E-mail seller for further advise.

We get email back saying that someone has hacked into his account so it has been temporarily suspended. He has offered an alternative. Does this concern you?

His ebay history is as follows:

Registered in 2006, brought 2 items. No activity since.

Sold 5 items in the last 2 days, with another 5 active listings.

Does he seem a bit active all of a sudden?

Can I query this with ebay or paypal?
Would you pay to alternative paypal address?
Would you offer a cheque?
What protection do I have if I pay via diff paypal/cheque?
Can I pull out of sale?

glad it's sorted (to an extent)def alarm bells ringing!

flibbertyjibbet · 27/06/2007 11:57

I was reading this thread thinking 'sounds like yet another ebay scamming method' so will look out in future in case anyone tries it with us.
Its a shame that idiots like this put geniune people off using ebay.

But then its only a pair of trainers, hope your DP is not toooo heartbroken!

SlightlyMadShorthair · 27/06/2007 11:58

No - he's fine....he was going to take his chance and accept it if went pear shaped...but now he has no genuine contact details he is with me.

We still havn't had a response from the seller about pulling out

SlightlyMadShorthair · 27/06/2007 14:40

the plot thickens

A new ebayer has brought one of his items and left feedback within 1 min of auction end - he won't have actually received it yet!!!!

And the new ebyer that has one it has a similar theme in his name to that on the paypal account I have been asked to pay into.

I am highly likely to report now....just waiting for a response to my request to withdraw

sixlostmonkeys · 27/06/2007 14:46

I'd report now. You won't get a reply for the withdraw.

Honestly you must report.

can you give us the name so that we can report too? remember when we reported the fake pushchair chair - was the same tactics as you describe now

SlightlyMadShorthair · 27/06/2007 14:47

Can you link to thte oushchair thread?

Not sure about giving details for a mass report...I will sort it out tonight

Hi, Report the seller asap, don't worry about waiting for a response from him. I have seen an ebay seller obviously set up another account to bid up buyers on their own auctions, these dodgy sellers need stopping. It sounds as though they've used the other id to buy their own goods and leave good feedback so that no one suspects. Good luck with it all.

SlightlyMadShorthair · 27/06/2007 19:44

Grrrrrrrr

Not having a very good ebay week......just brought another item from someone else....they say they won't post until there transfer from paypal to their bank has cleared....then they are off on holiday for a week so it will be 2 weeks before we are likely to recieve

Grrrrr

LadyVictoriaOfCake · 27/06/2007 19:46

dont do it. dh ebay account has been hacked. hacker set up alturnative paypal account. we have the police involved.

sixlostmonkeys · 27/06/2007 19:50

slightlymad - tell them that paypal is instant and you DO NOT have to wait for them to transfer it, they are being rediculous - tell them you can file a dispute on day 10 - so please will they send it now

SconesandMajesticSandwiches · 27/06/2007 21:15

Right have sorted out the paypal clearance issue...is goign to be posted tomorrow.

What do you think about this for reporting the first guy to ebay? I have never done this before - is it too long, will I get a poxy box that will allow me to put 3 words in?

Tried to pay into PayPal account and this was blocked, emailed seller and was told that their PayPal account had been hacked. Gave me an alternative account to pay into. I am unhappy to do this as I believe I loose buyer protection.
Further investigation of his history concerned me. Relatively new ebayer (Nov 2006) with a history of 2 purchases soon after setting up ebay account and no activity in the last 6months. Suddenly has approx 10 listings to end in the space of a few days.
Requested contact details from ebay so that I could reassure myself that this was a genuine ebayer. The telephone number is not recognised and there are no other contact details and I don?t think his postal address is logged with ebay. I have now requested that the buyer allows a mutual withdrawal form sale on the grounds that I believed I would be able to pay by PayPal with buyer protection but this is no longer the case.
In a transaction that ended 22:53 on the 26 June the buyer and seller both left feedback within 2 mins of auction end. This appears to be the buyers first transaction. The buyers username (XXXXX2k7 )bears resemblance to the paypal account (XXXXX2k7) I have been asked to pay into. I am concerned that this is a Schill bid by the seller.

worleyhurley · 27/06/2007 21:18

hi, sorry to hijack but can i ask a question,
i sold my breastpump on ebay a few days ago and today the buyer has sent me a message to ask if they can buy by bank transfre as they didnt realise it was cash /cheque only not paypal,
she says she needs it quickly and cant wait to send a cheque, dp says not to do it, but i dont know what to do? they have brought newborn things for the past few months and have a 100% rating, so the bf mummy side of me knows what its like to need the pump asap, but why didnt they notice that i didnt have paypal in the payment sections....

what should i do??

LadyVictoriaOfCake · 27/06/2007 21:19

tel lthem to send a postal order.

SconesandMajesticSandwiches · 27/06/2007 21:22

Agree with LVC

sixlostmonkeys · 27/06/2007 22:25

scones - re reporting - you will go through a process of drop down menus and then at the end where it says email ebay you can type all of the above

sixlostmonkeys · 27/06/2007 22:27

woreley - I understand from reading teh ebay forums that bank transfers are perfectly safe. I've never accepted them tho.

Postal order sounds your best bet

SconesandMajesticSandwiches · 27/06/2007 22:52

6monkeys - do you have a link that I could use to report this? I can only find a lin to be used by police/government agencies.

Thanks,

sixlostmonkeys · 28/06/2007 09:17

at the very bottom of the listing there is a button called report this item - click that.

then

select a subtopic
step 1 - freudulent listing

then step 2

requesting payment via unsafe method

then next page - click email and send all the details
