Hi, iv bought something 2nd hand I'm not happy with. The item is too worn for what I need it for.
Would you go through ebay to return it or just send it back without the hassle?
I don't mind paying the return postage as it was free shipping to start with.

Definitely do it through eBay. If you don't go through the eBay returns process then the seller can just say if didn't arrive and then you are left out of pocket.
Also make sure you send it recorded delivery.

This happened to my sister!

Yes definitely through eBay. I once returned something that was broken not through eBay (it was a major charity so I expected them to be trustworthy) and the seller said they'd never received it. I ended up with nothing.

If you do it through ebay and the seller agrees to the return then eBay will provide a pre-paid return label which can be tracked. Therefore always process returns through ebay.
(The seller will get charged for the return label).
