I suspect the seller is bidding against me to raise the price

There was absolutely no interest in this item, and I asked a question where I foolishly said how desperate I was to win it.
Almost immediately another bid was put in from a brand new ebayer (no feedback etc) and they have bid higher than me every time I renew my bid.
Maybe I'm just sour as I really want it and it is now too expensive.
But do ebay hav ways of preventing this from happening?

maybe they have an automatic bid

Blackduck · 30/05/2007 10:25

It does happen - know people who sell on ebay and do this all the time immoral IMO but there you go..

gonnaneedabiggerboat · 30/05/2007 10:26

What are you looking to get - is anyone else selling one?

A good tip is do not put your bid on until the last 30secs of time as someone else will have the oppurtunity of putting in a higher bid. Also always stick to your budget, it is so easy to get carried away.

Of course I shouldn;t really be saying this as I'm always sticking things on ebay and several times have doen well out of people getting carried away!!!

TootyFrooty · 30/05/2007 10:27

Does sound like an automatic bid but that doesn't mean it's not a stooge bidder who'll try to get the price up. Just leave the item alone now and if it is a stooge then you'll find the item relisted pretty soon after it closes.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 30/05/2007 10:28

It is concert tickets. Completetly sold out elsewhere, but this is the only seller offering them.

OP posts:
LIZS · 30/05/2007 10:28

Stop bidding then , it really can't be that worthhwile to pay over the odds if noone else was interested.

VioletBaudelaire · 30/05/2007 10:28

suspected shill bidding can be reported to ebay.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 30/05/2007 10:29

It is so hard to know. Of course it could just be someone who has never ebayed before and so perfectl legitimate.
I guess I'm just bitter as I wanted them sooo much!

OP posts:
PinkChick · 30/05/2007 10:30

if it is imaginary bidder they may come back to one once closed to offer you 'second chance' at your last bid!

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 30/05/2007 10:32

Thats a good point pinkchick.
I may aswell hold out and see.
It is now far too expensive for us anyway.

OP posts:
sixlostmonkeys · 30/05/2007 10:48

can you look at the sellers history and see if this user id has been used before on his auctions? If it has then it should be reported as shill bidding.

It may turn out as previously mentioned though - they may retract their bid and you could win.

Be careful how you pay for something like this

Ceolas · 30/05/2007 10:50

when does it end?

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 30/05/2007 10:56

It ends in 20 minutes.
The seller is wanting to meet in central london tonight (the night of the concert) to collect the tickets for cash which worries me also.

OP posts:
popsycal · 30/05/2007 10:59

avoid avoid avoid

sixlostmonkeys · 30/05/2007 11:13

what popsycal says with added avoidance!

Hulababy · 30/05/2007 11:15

Definitely avoid; sounds a bit dodgy.

gigglinggoblin · 30/05/2007 11:18

the way they want paying would make me avoid them without the other worry. too many scams exactly like that

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 30/05/2007 11:19

Surely collection of tickets and cash is quitea good way to avoid being scammed? Unless of course they are counterfei tickets

OP posts:
wheresthehamster · 30/05/2007 11:20

But if the concert is tonight how else would the exchange take place?

But the auction itself doesn't sound right so don't be suckered in if they come back to you as the second highest bidder.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 30/05/2007 11:24

You guys were right. Bidding finished and I got a message almost instantly saying 'highest bidder has pulled out, make me an offer if you are interested'

OP posts:
Ceolas · 30/05/2007 11:25

Make a ridiculous offer and see what happens.

NotQuiteCockney · 30/05/2007 11:28

You can report the seller for shill bidding. It is against the rules (unsurprisingly).

They probably would have tried it with you, even if you hadn't made clear you really wanted the tickets - people generally really want to go to shows, if they want to go at all, iyswim.

TootyFrooty · 30/05/2007 11:33

Offer him £1.50 per ticket and see what happens. He'll be desparate!

Report him to ebay (after the concert )

aDad · 30/05/2007 11:39

you are now in a very good position because they dont have time to relist, so dont offer too much if you go for it.

If it doesn't work out I'm sure you can buy one outside the venue for a reasonable price anyway.

popsycal · 30/05/2007 11:41

if it wasnt for feedback i woul dprentend to take them then not turn up lol

I think you just dont reply but report him
