I need to send something to USA is it best to tick other on the form? Does anyone know if buyer has to pay fees at their end or is it for goods over a certain value?
Has anyone tried a courier instead of royal mail? thanks

We tick other and declare value in GBP. Whether customs will be charged will depend on the value of the parcel - think it's over £20 ish but may be wrong. Doesn't matter which courier you used customs will still be charged.

I prefer sending international parcels by the global shipping programme as we rarely get parcels going missing with them & if they do get lost you do not lose out on the international postage. Watch out for the tracking terms and conditions with other couriers as some only track in the UK and not in the destination country (not exactly helpful).
