Buyer has feedback set to private

Hi I sold my sons game console on Thursday and I have yet to receive payment from the buyer (2 days later). I noticed that the buyer has a positive feedback score but I can't view the feedback because it is set to 'private'. The console plus games sold for over 200 pounds and I'm concerned the buyer maybe a scammer. My son is really excited at the prospect of receiving so much money and keeps asking when we will be paid. I haven't chased the buyer but am not considering trying to cancel the purchase if I can. Any opinions please?

You are over reacting. And besides sellers can't leave negative feedback for buyers so it's irrelevant anyway.

Send the buyer a polite reminder asking them to pay within 24 hours and if they don't, open a non payment case then re list once it's been closed.

Lots of people start to make their feedback private this time of year if they use eBay to buy Christmas presents and the like.

Thanks for your replies I do tend to flap a bit when things like this happen. I have contacted buyer no response as yet. I just don't understand why you would bid and then not pay.

Why would someone bid then not pay?
Well as the saying goes, never underestimate the stupidity of the general public.

This is reasonably common on eBay, which is why I tend to list larger items like this as a buy it now (with immediate payment required), or better still gumtree as there are no seller fees to pay. Just make sure you list the price as a bit higher that you actually want as people always try and cut you down.

Firstly, before you can relist, you need to open a non payment case, and if you haven't received payment within 3 / 4 days then close the case and get your fees back.

However, if you are inexperienced with eBay I wouldn't suggest using it to sell expensive items. Ebay is a great selling platform but It's important you totally understand how to protect yourself as a seller and how eBay works.

Ok I have opened a case I really appreciate your advice. I probably was a bit naive but I would never bid on an item if I didn't intend to buy it!

Buyers might hide their feedback if they are shopping for gifts but in my experience they hide it when they have comments from people they have bought from and treated like shit which don't meet the criteria for being removed and are too honest to paint the buyer in a good light.

Buyers often open a new account for their gift buying so that no-one knows about it.

If you haven't sold a lot you might need to set your seller preferences tighter, block people with non-payment strikes over a set time, people with no credit card on file etc. It reduces the time wasters.

Add the buyer to your blocked bidder list to stop them doing it again.

If they don't pay within 7 days I would cancel it, in fact I would cancel it now tbh and sell it elsewhere, it's gonna cost £30ish in fees on your £200 console. Gumtree or facebay would be a better marketplace, cash on collection and your DS would get the full sale price.

I have sold twice to buyers with private feedback. Both left me negatives for no reason.... 1 because the item didn't include something which was not even in the listing and the other because they said the address label was smudged. I would never do it again.

I can see no reason at all to hide behind private feedback.

Sorry name changed since last post! Buyer has finally paid and I have sent the item. I have told my son he can't have the cash until the item has been received and the buyer is happy! Still feel a bit unsure about them. They didn't respond to any of my messages and then paid last night out of the blue! Anyway fingers crossed all ok. Thanks for the advice everyone Smile

Also, if you're a new seller, PayPal will hold the payment for 21 days even if they do pay
