Odd 'second chance' offers. Should I be worried?

Over the last couple of days I've had about a dozen supposed 'second chance offer' emails, some from ebay and some the 'seller'. All for mobile phones from the US that I haven't bid on. The ebay id quoted in the email isn't my ebay userid, but it's very similar to my email address.

When I look at the item on ebay it's a valid item but the bid that I am supposed to have made is way down the list (e.g. winning bid $165, my bid $65, at least 10 other bids in between).

So has someone managed to register an ebay id using my email address? Should I worry about these and is there anyway they can 'get into' my real ebay id?

Have sent a couple of spoof@ebay and they confirmed that they are real ebay emails but just went on to explain to me what second chance offers are (which I already know!).

Don't do it if in doubt! Ebay is riddled with fraud. I had my identity stolen and people asking me where their stuff was. ebay don't want to know either if you have a problem they sent my account to a credit agency and I had to report it all to the police I had no-end of problems. I avoid it now altogether.

If you haven;t bid on them, there must be some sort of error, I'd try contacting ebay again, explaining that it isn't even your user id, so can they sort it out. The person may have dozens of the phones, and be sending out that many second chance offers, but you shouldn't be getting them.

I would look at the ebay id in question and see if you can find out what's going on there, iyswim. I would be a bit worried. Can you raise the issue again with ebay, explaining about the different account thing?

Is your email address a web email? You should probably change the password (make sure it's a very good one, obviously), just to be safe.

Thanks for the replies.

There's definitely something strange going on - I've received 3 more emails this morning, all from different sellers offering the same item number???

Will try ebay again and see if they can help.
