Seller asking me to send more money for postage

Just purchased some crockery. Initially they listed postage as 2.80. I queried this. They changed it to 12.90. I lurched item for 9.99 plus the 12.90 postage. Anyway I've had 3 messages today saying they've posted it but postage was 3.50 more than they thought so please can I send the extra over.
I thought they had to honour what they had put in the listing? I have occasionally taken a knock this way when selling.
WWYD?

But you were saying that if the OP had two options: return the whole set for a refund or keep some of the unbroken pieces and request a partial refund. Like she had a moral duty to at least pay for the unbroken items. I disagreed.

I pointed out that she could get a full refund AND keep all the stuff because a partial set is kind of worthless and the seller most likely won't want the unbroken items back. It depends on what the seller's response is.

Yes, but my point was that's not her decision to make, it's the sellers.
I was referring to the fact that The OP was explaining that her husband was discussing keeping the unbroken parts, but that's up to the seller not the buyer.

I didn't suggest anything about a moral duty, I make a living from eBay so I know theres no point in that, as we all know it all comes down to eBay's rule book!

The fact is the seller can request she sends all the pieces back, otherwise she won't get her refund. Reading the FT I would imagine that they will.

The other day I sold something for a few quid. The courier added £2 to the postage charge because it was the islands. It's happened to me before and I suck it up.

19lottie82 · 28/06/2017 14:31

That's a bit different though rocky.

MightyMcMe · 05/07/2017 17:05

Just in case anyone is interested the seller responded as suspected.

'did you get my message about the £3.50 extra postage which you should have paid ,but failed to do .please accept the £3.50 as a generous offer for the damage'

In other words they appear to be completely unable to see that they were in the wrong .

Escalate to eBay, they should sort it for you. Seller is an arse.

mummabubs · 05/07/2017 17:19

Yeah; escalate to eBay and they'll refund you in full including postage costs- clearly they didn't spend the postage money on sufficient packaging!! Was the box even labelled as fragile? The seller sounds thoroughly unpleasant, I'm sorry you're having to deal with this. Open a dispute and eBay/PayPal will back you OP xx

Marv1nGay3 · 05/07/2017 17:22

I sometimes sell on eBay and have underestimated the postage. I would never ask a buyer to pay for the extra, though-it's my mistake!

MightyMcMe · 05/07/2017 17:24

is there a link to explain postage and that actually I wasn't wrong not to pay more? I get the impression the seller doesn't realise. Obviously I have explained.

I once sold something but didn't charge enough postage. It was waaay more than I expected. But I took the hit as I should have checked before listing the item.

EnglandKeepMyBones · 05/07/2017 17:28

Can you now just escalate to eBay completely?

Lancelottie · 05/07/2017 17:28

Stop trying to get them to see that they are wrong. There's no arguing with stupid.

Just get your money back from eBay.

MightyMcMe · 05/07/2017 17:34

I find it frustrating that I couldn't just contact eBay directly in the first place about this. Having to go via the seller just makes them more angry . It's certainly put me off eBay although I've been fortunate so far in my experience.

OP posts:
MightyMcMe · 05/07/2017 17:34

I have to wait a bit longer to escalate fully. There's a date.

OP posts:
catkind · 05/07/2017 17:36

Yep, escalate to ebay. They're either idiots or deliberately cheating the system, I incline to the latter but either way no point arguing with them.

EnglandKeepMyBones · 05/07/2017 17:36

Ah bugger. It's a shame, but just wait for the date and escalate to eBay. You tried with the (absolutely bonkers) seller.

MarklahMarklah · 05/07/2017 17:37

They don't want you to look after their kids, unpaid, for the whole summer holidays too, do they?

It's their responsibility to price both items and postage appropriately. If they wanted more money for their precious Denby, then they ought to have put a higher reserve price on it. If they thought postage would be higher, then they should have sorted that out before listing the item.
Just tell them you'll leave it in the hands of Ebay to resolve?

ememem84 · 05/07/2017 17:37

Just report to eBay. Send pictures of your damaged items. eBay will side with the buyer. They generally do. And you will get your refund.

ColossalKalamari · 05/07/2017 17:42

It doesn't matter if the seller gets angry though, eBay will sort it!

ExpatinBah · 18/07/2017 13:51

They have number 663 and 100% positive...

Good based on their correspondence to you - give them their first neg :-) I damn well would without hesitation.
