Seller asking me to send more money for postage

MightyMcMe · 23/06/2017 18:48

Just purchased some crockery. Initially they listed postage as 2.80. I queried this. They changed it to 12.90. I lurched item for 9.99 plus the 12.90 postage. Anyway I've had 3 messages today saying they've posted it but postage was 3.50 more than they thought so please can I send the extra over.
I thought they had to honour what they had put in the listing? I have occasionally taken a knock this way when selling.
WWYD?

I'd report too. I'd also send them photos of me drinking smartprice cola out of the cups Grin

AdalindSchade · 24/06/2017 07:39

Don't pay for goodness sake! So what if they have your address? People don't seek out eBay buyers to confront in person over £3.50

mummabubs · 24/06/2017 07:45

I'm definitely don't pay! And I would be reporting. If they hadn't sent that last message maybe I wouldn't go that far but it sounds like they tried to intimidate you (and maybe have succeeded?) I've sold on eBay before and the T&Cs for sellers are made very clear that it's the seller's responsibility to ensure they charge the correct amount for postage and take into account things like packaging and petrol costs (to get it to a post office) etc, never yours. To be honest I would not have even queried the £2.80 originally and been happy with a good bargain. Really shameful behaviour on the seller's part and I'd definitely be leaving negative/neutral feedback to warn other buyers... especially if this looks like something they are doing as common practice! Enjoy your Denby OP, it's definitely not "wasted" on you! Xx

mummabubs · 24/06/2017 07:47

Sorry for all the typos there, hazard of reading MN from bed with one eye open! 🙈

eternalopt · 24/06/2017 07:51

Tell them Denby is wasted on people too stupid to realise that you can't send heavy crockery for £2.80 and too stupid to work out the right postage even when this is pointed out to them (given that they appear to be using Denby as some sort of marker of character 😂)

eternalopt · 24/06/2017 07:52

I'd report too. I'd also send them photos of me drinking smartprice cola out of the cups

No way would I pay after that message from them!! Honestly no one is going to come looking for you over £3.50. Just report them and forget all about it.

Twodogsandahooch · 24/06/2017 07:57

Definitely a scam. Luring you in with low postage cost. The 2.80 wasn't a mistake.

I would report. That is an intimidating message.

EnglandKeepMyBones · 24/06/2017 10:42

Do not pay that arsehole another penny!

Report to eBay. If you do want to reply, tell him to fuck off. He's a chancer and doesn't like the fact that someone has said no to his little scam.

HeyRoly · 24/06/2017 10:45

It isn't necessarily a scam.

When you make a listing, eBay gives you "suggested postage". It could be that this seller is too lazy/incompetent to calculate and enter the correct postage, and accepts the default figure entered by eBay.

nauticant · 24/06/2017 21:40

I'd also report to ebay. It doesn't matter whether the seller is stupid, lazy, or scammy, that kind of messaging makes ebay a worse place to deal with.

Pixie2015 · 24/06/2017 21:43

I always underestimate postage if I sell anything I think it's part of the game their loss x

19lottie82 · 24/06/2017 22:36

Make sure you leave appropriate feedback.

childmaintenanceserviceinquiry · 24/06/2017 22:51

Sorry I am slightly puzzled from your OP.

The original listing stated £9-99 auction start price plus £2-80 (so before the 1st April Royal mail price change). You queried this, as I would have done, and the P&P was changed to £12-90? You won the auction, only bidder, and paid the £9-99 plus £12-90 postage? The seller has then come back to you and requested you to pay a FURTHER £3-50 P&P after the auction has ended. WOW!

So if you had not queried it and you had won the auction with P&P at £2-80. You would have been totally within your ebay contract to receive the goods at that postage price. Personally I dont think you would ever have received those goods.

I agree with other PP - this is scam behaviour designed to make those listings look greater value for money. Do report to ebay. I am not sure you will get anywhere but it may put a black mark on the account.

expatinscotland · 24/06/2017 22:56

Get a backbone and REPORT this chancer to Ebay. Don't pay him a penny!

MightyMcMe · 25/06/2017 08:14

That's exactly right childmaintainence. I questions the 2.80 as realised it was too low. When I asked for all delivered forvthat he said no. So I said please recalculate . I even pointed out if he didn't I thought he would have to honour it. You are right though I doubt would have arrived at that price. Then when postage was put up to 12.90 I thought that sounded more like it.
Anyway I haven't paid the extra . will report . Thanks all you've made me stop doubting myself.

I can't find out how to report. It doesn't fit into any of their categories.

If you are in the UK this is the customer service number according to google. 0800 358 6551

Thanks

I had a similar situation, OP.

Ebay advised me that the seller had broken their contract & as such, a note had been made on their system.

As he has broken the contract, ebay will remove any negative feedback he leaves you.

ImaLannister · 25/06/2017 23:41

Don't pay! You don't have to. I'm a seller, and sometimes I underestimate postage, but guess what, that was my fault, and my own error, so I pay it.
How dare he message you! I think it's damn right cheeky. Report him defo. Reporting is anonymous.
Also, message him back in response to his 'perhaps' message. Message him and say 'perhaps you should list the proper postage' instead of asking the buyer to make up for your mistakes.
He is a bad seller. I would never dream of doing that. Also, leave him bad feedback. He will be even more annoyed that his 100% score is ruined for a year! Takes a year to clear.

woodhill · 25/06/2017 23:55

Odd as didn't you say postage was now £12.90 which is plenty or suggest they use My Hermes. I sent a huge salad bowl for about £5.99 last year

MoreProseccoNow · 26/06/2017 13:51

Just be aware that many carriers, including Royal Mail & myHermes, will not insure crockery or glass products. Not so much an issue for you, but your seller very clearly hasn't done their research.

OlennasWimple · 26/06/2017 13:59

And this is why I don't buy or sell on eBay any longer. It's not what it was, is it?

MightyMcMe · 26/06/2017 17:06

Still not arrived. Yes I have no idea who he was posting with for it to allegedly cost 16.40. It was 5 plates and 5 bowls.
I'm more of a buyer than seller but thankfully this is my first unpleasant eBay encounter.
